Part 1: Why are ants showing up in the bathroom?

If this is your first time dealing with ants around your home, it might seem surprising where they appear. It’s common knowledge that ants are drawn to sugary spills in the kitchen or snacks dropped by kids throughout the house—but why are they sometimes found in clean bathrooms?

The answer is simple: moisture.

Even small amounts of water, like condensation from a warm shower or a slow-dripping faucet, are incredibly valuable to ants. What seems like an insignificant droplet to us can be a crucial water source for an entire colony. Bathrooms often provide consistent moisture, making them ideal for ants scouting for resources.

Other reasons ants may be in your bathroom:

  • Residue – On rare occasions, hygiene products like toothpaste, soap, or shampoos can contain sweet-smelling compounds that may attract ants.

  • Other pests – Insects like silverfish or drain flies can become a food source for ants. (Good news: Nest takes care of those too!)

  • Organic matter – Even small traces of skin cells or hair can be enough to sustain some species of ants. They’re nature’s recyclers, after all.

The good news? You don’t have to tackle this on your own. Nest Pest Control technicians are trained to identify the root cause and apply targeted, effective solutions. From applying pet-safe barriers along your home’s baseboards to using strategic baits that disrupt ant colonies at the source, Nest provides thoughtful, science-based treatments that help keep your home ant-free.

Part 2:

Why am I seeing ants with wings?

Seeing winged ants around your home can be confusing—and even concerning. These are usually reproductive ants, often referred to as “alates.” Their appearance can signal that a colony is trying to expand or relocate.

But before jumping to conclusions, there’s an important first step:

Is it even an ant?

Winged ants and termites look very similar, but there are a few key differences:

  • Body Shape – Ants have three distinct body segments with narrow “waists.” Termites, on the other hand, have a more uniform, tube-shaped body.

  • Wings – Both have two pairs of wings, but in ants, the front wings are longer than the hind wings. In termites, both pairs are about the same size.

Identifying the right pest is crucial, and Nest Pest Control can help with that. Our trained technicians will accurately assess the situation and develop a tailored plan, whether you’re dealing with harmless flying ants or something more serious like termites.
